Treasure Maps of Where We Go
Workshop 1: an exercise where students will create secret treasure maps that explore the physical places they travel in their daily lives.
In this workshop students will encounter and discover connections and perspectives they may not have previously considered. These workshops will engage youth in collecting a variety of data from and about their community. The act of creating these personal maps invites youth to find meaning in the data they uncover about themselves and invites them to create unique graphical representations of the paths they etch in the landscape of their lives. The treasure maps will speak to important places in a student’s daily life, how they get there, and how long it takes them to get there. Students will also overlay their maps and compare their points of interest.
Rather than marking standard destination spots, students will mark the spots they think are the best place to: go for a walk, see the moon, watch the planes, be inspired, see nature, be alone, be with others, hear music, smell good food, or to celebrate. (Unusual mapping data focus is inspired by the Mission Possible, A Neighborhood Atlas.)
Workshop 2:
In this workshop students will create automata which incorporate their custom maps and students will graphically represent data of their transit paths.

This workshop series will inform the design and art of 11 new bus stop shelters in San Jose, California. Special Spots was funded by the Valley Transit Authority (VTA) and the San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs.
